Packing for Peru

First, I have to take out the batteries from the laptops. The batteries are very heavy. We separated the batteries and the laptops and wrapped them in clothing that we could donate to the people in Piura.

Sometimes, you just have to pose when you pack.

Packing the laptops and the clothing

I also packed more books in a box instead of a bag because the laptop chargers, mice, and speakers fit better in a box. I could also stuff more books and candy in a box than I could in a bag, and it still weighed under 50 lbs, the weight limit for the bag.

Here's a picture of the luggage that will hold the items that I'll be bringing to Peru! The two bags in the middle hold one projector respectively because the lamp in the projector breaks easily and is expensive as well.

More Supplies

Here are some additional supplies that I will be bringing to Piura. In addition to other supplies such as technology, I will also be bringing candy and other chocolates to hand out to the people in Peru, since chocolate and other food down there can be very expensive.

Since I've never been to Piura before and don't know what the food down there is like, I'll just be bringing an assortment of food (junk food of course!) to see whether the local kids will appreciate it or not :)

Several other items that are necessary for our trip to Peru are

Bringing Technology!

Not just any technology, but green technology. I will be bringing twelve solar lights to Peru as well as eight laptops, sixteen speakers, eight mice and two projectors. Because many children in the parish do not want to attend school. I hope that by bringing technology to the classrooms, we can both improve the quality of education that these children get as well as encourage them to come to school and learn as well.

While I am down there, I'll be analyzing the capability of their computer lab as well as introducing the teachers to new software such as Word and other things that we use everyday. Most of the hardware that we bring down there uses very little power, so they should be fine power usage wise!

Vaccination Menu

This is the list of all the shots available at the Public Health Department at San Jose. We arrived there at 11:30, but we had to wait until 1:00 because they were closed for lunch. We waited at Starbucks and came back to an extremely long line. After we finally got to the beginning of the line and turned in our forms, we were able to get more information about Peru. The Yellow Fever shots were really expensive, and we might have gotten Typhoid shots as well, but we decided not to because they were also really expensive, and we could come back for them anyway.

Then, we went through all of the procedures and got a list of medicine to buy and bug repellent and warnings, and finally, we were done!

After a Yellow Fever vaccine, I am ready (immunization wise) for Piura! All that's left is packing and itinerary.

Preparing for Peru

Before I go to Piura, I need to take a Yellow Fever shot because Piura is right on the edge of a Yellow Fever zone. Several other diseases exist in this place, such as Malaria and Typhoid.

There are no yellow fever maps, but here's a malaria map of Peru that shows where Malaria exists. Piura is in one of those zones!!
